Control journal

One thing that you will find key in your quest to have a clean and happy home like they did in the fifties is your control journal.  This is a binder or small folder with tabs to put papers in.  You can start with a real simple control journal that you make your self or you can buy one from the FLYLADY flyshop at www.theflylady.net.  I will give you some examples of what is in my control journal.  I have my daily to do list, menu planner, weekly chores (I have one day on a page and what I do on that do) I have emergacy phone numbers and my address book to.  I also keep a list of the games that I play and you can find all these gams on https://www.facebook.com/messages/conversation-id.123046864511256#!/groups/flyingabovethemoon/?fref=ts they are located in the files section.  I keep mine really basic and I put all of the pages that I will be writing on in a sheet protector and then I can write on it in dry erase and when I need to start over I can wipe it off and start again.  I have a list of things that are a must do for the day and a may do for the day.  I hope this helps you get your control journal started when you have this going you will be never believe how fast your house will get clean

Update

I want this post to be an update on how things are going so far in the life as a fifties housewife.  I so far have not been able to do much in the way of the dresses and heels that they did back then.  I am trying my best to do the cooking and cleaning the way that they did.  So far I have been keeping a clean house and company ready all the time and getting the supper on the table at a decent time.  I am working on keeping the meals the same as they were back then like the fried chops and fried chicken.  I have also done things like chicken pot pie and chicken and dumplings.   I know from people that I have talked to that they ate a lot of chicken.  They were able to raise the chickens and collect the eggs for their baking and for the daily eggs for breakfast.  They also drink a lot of milk to keep the bones healthy and promote growth.  I have added this to my daily life.  We are having a glass for breakfast and then the kids have a glass with supper.  The kids also have milk for lunch at school.  Tea is what we have for the adults to drink for supper.  They also drink a lot of water to keep their bodies healthy and promote good skin.  I have always been good at drinking water since I started to follow the Flylady she has an awesome water bottle that will hold ice all day and keep your water fresh.  I have been carrying this and refilling it several times a day to get in the water that you need to get in to live like a fifties housewife.  These are the most changes that I have found in the last few weeks that I have been trying to live like a fifties housewife.  I hope that you enjoy reading this.  If you want to join me in my journey check out my facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/214824648648096/  also check out the Flylady for more information on how to fly and also to get a water bottle like mine.  I highly recommend this water bottle you can get to her site at www.flylady.net

Flying with kids

Sometimes flying with kids can be hard and when you are flying like you are in the fifties you have to make things look great and the kids looking like perfect little angels.  I have found a few things that I have found to help me here are a few things that are working for me:

  • Sit out there clothes the night before
  • Put all outfits together so they can just pull out a outfit and put it on. (I put them in gallon or jumbo bags with there panties and socks just grab a bag and go)
  • As part of the BBR get everything you can ready for the next day. (lunches, book bags, shoes, jackets, ect.)
  • I will lay out the kids tooth brushes and toothpaste and sit a alarm for them they know when the alarm goes off they have to get up get dressed to shoes and brush their teeth before coming down for breakfast. (this saves me and them time)
  • They need to make their beds before they leave the house to take some of the pressure off mommy.
  • I also have them to put their dirty clothes in the hamper before they leave so they are ready for mommy to wash.
  • Each kid has simple chores such as (empty trash, feed animals, S&S, fold laundry, everyone has to put away their own laundry but daddy that is mommy's job. )
Just having a few things that you do over and over for a month will become a habit and become a routine.  The routines are the key to our success and when you get a routine down you will see major changes in your life.  Routines have become a way of life for me and I have seen major changes in my life since I have started to use routines.  For more information on Flying and rountines check out the Flylady at www.flylady.net

Chicken pot pie

Chop up your veg and chicken and put in a pan fill with water to just above the top

This is the pie crust that I made it is split into two sections ready to be rolled out and made to look like a pie crust

Here is the rust rolled out

Once you have cooked this for 15 min put it aside for later

This is the filling you will make.  Melt 3/4c of butter with onions till transparent or I use onion powder I don't like onions then celey seeds , salt, and pepper.  Once it is melted add in 2/3c of milk and 1 3/4c of chicken broth cook this on med for about 15 min till it thinkens.  Once this is thickened then add the chicken and veg and then pour this mixture over in the pie pan and place the other pie crust over the top.  Close the edges and put 4 small slits in the top.

You will want to cut off the excess I did not get all this you can see the blacked edges where i did not get it all but all in all it looks great.

Baby steps

I cannot say how important that baby steps are to your success.  Baby steps will get you there when you are teaching your kids to walk the baby takes baby steps and they fall then they get up and try it again until they get it. You have to take this same approach.  You will start with a few steps Flylady always starts with a clean and shiny sink this is very important.  You will not know how good it will make your kitchen look.  To check out all the steps to shine your sink check out Flylady’s website www.flylady.net.  She will walk you through all the steps and even has a really good video on it.  Now I want to talk to you about my shinny sink and how I started.  I found the Flylady on January the 1 of 2010.  It was perfect timing and I got up at 10:30pm and put all the dishes on counter and poured in the bleach and started to shine.  I had to let it sit for a hour so I filled each side.  It was almost 2 in the morning before that I was done with this.  I crashed after doing this and when I woke up in the morning I had forgot about shinning my sink.  I forgot to mention that I did all the dishes when I was done.  I was living in another house than I do now and had a dish washer then so they all went into there so my sink was still shinning when I was done.  I woke up the next morning and went into the kitchen to start breakfast and that sink was shining at me like a new diamond ring.  I had a smile on my face and knew that I would always keep it looking this clean.  I of course fell off the wagon a few different times but every time I go back to same baby steps and start with a shiny sink.  Just remember to take baby steps to not get overwhelmed and when you fall get back up and start the baby steps all over again.

TIPS

Take your breaks

Taking regular breaks are key.  I mean this you have to take your regular breaks.  I think that everyone thinks that women in the 50’s cleaned all day long, but this may now be true.  In the 50’s they realized what cleaning was all about and this is what I am learning now by following the Flylady.  I was not really taught to clean I was always told go clean your room but no one would say you need to go in and pick up all the dirty clothes then move on to putting the books away so on and so forth.  I found that I was doing this to my kids so I started to change the way that I told them to clean there room I would say you have 5 min go pick up all the dirty clothes then I give them another time frame and another task.  This is what I had to learn to do for myself.  I had to learn to look at the room and decide what needed to be done and make a list.  I decided what I need to do first and I sit my timer for 15 min and never longer than that.  When that timer goes off I sit down and rest.  I will go back and do this again when my 15 min break is over.  This will allow me to get everything done and take my breaks.  You can do it and remember beaks are key.

Using your Timer

How do I use my timer?  Well this may sound silly to some of you but you do have to know how to use your timer right.  Trust me there is a way to use the timer wrong.  I have do this if you sit the timer for to long than you will crash and burn and end up throwing in the towel and be frustrated with yourself.   Okay here it is here is how to sit your timer, decide how long you can work at one time 5, 10, or 15 min.  Never more than 15 min for one project if you are limited on time and you have to get it done you can do 3 15 min sessions at one time but no more than this and every 15 minutes you have to switch to a different job.   Like when I have been sick I will do 15 minutes in the kitchen and then move to the bathroom and do 15 minutes in this room and then end with the living room.  You can do this in any room.  If you are trying to work on one room you can do this by pulling out boxes of the closet and work for 15 minutes then move to a dresser or other area in the room for 15 min then you can go back to the first area for the first 15 minutes.  When I help the kids clean or clean for the kids when they are not here I will do 15 minutes of picking up off the floor then 15 minutes of hanging clothes and putting in the drawers then I move to vacuum and dusting for 15 minutes.  I will usually have time in the last 15 to make the beds to guess what the room is done and it only took 45 minutes and I can move on to the next room.  This is the key to using your timer.

Routines

I said above that you do not have to clean all day and you will be able to take regular breaks, and this is all because of your routines.  If you will follow your routines and include your hot spots and time to do a 27 fling boogie in your routines your home will be clean and you will not know what to do with the time.  This will leave you more time with the kids and family and you will be able to take up a hobby.  I have decided that I would take up a 50’s hobby to keep with the theme and this is to knit.  Just remember that you will have to stick to these routines so do not add to much to fast.   What I did to start my routines was I wrote down three small things that I could do and not take long like for my morning routine I started with make my bed, swish and swipe the bathroom and then eat breakfast.  Once I had these things down I moved on to add another step to my routine.  Do not let your routine take to long never have it more than a hour I can get mine done in about thirty minutes.

Homemade Laundry Soap

A friend gave me this recipe so I thought I would make it and share with everyone I have not used it yet but got it made fixing to put on a load of laundry now.  This cost me about 7.50  I got the dawn with a coupon for .50 the washing soda was 3.24 and the borax was 3.74.

HOMEMADE WASHING MECHINE SOAP
3 Tablespoons Borax
3 Tablespoons Washing Soda
2 Tablespoons Dawn Dish soap
Put these ingredients in a one gallon jug. Pour 4 cups boiling water into the jug. Swirl until ingredients are dissolved in the liquid. Let liquid cool. Then fill almost to the top with cold water. The bubbles will overflow out of the bottle.
I love this because you can pick an awesome scent with the Dawn dish soap. This dish soap works the best because it gets grease out. :o)

How to make a easy 50's dress

First go to the store I went to Wal-Mart and got these shirts on clearnce 2 of them are tee shirts and the white is a tank top then I picked up some material on clearance 2.00 a yard.  You will need about 3 yards for each dress.

Next you will want t cut the material.  You do this by wrapping this around your body one and a half times then cut.  No need to mesure just cut a strait line.  This is what it looked like when I was done cutting it. (it will come folded leave it folded in half this will leave a sem at the bottom so you will not have to hem it and you will have the same patern on both side also know as the right sides)
Then you will need to mesure the shirt but putting it on and seeing where you want it to stop I did this by marking it with a pen then cut just below the pen.  Below is a picture of the two piece that I will use to make the dress after they are cut.
Here you will see that I am sewing the sides up.  After this I turned the top layer down and made a top hem so that it was not rough at the top.  Next I put the shirt on the inside and stiched it together.

That is it when you have the shirt stiched to the fabric you are done.  Here is what it looked like on when I was done.  I think that I will get a black belt (large one) and put around the middle of this just to dress it up some.
